FILM DESCRIPTION

Two very different worlds - A documentary film about the perspectives of deaf and hearing people on how they view each other's communities and ways of life.
ABOUT THE DIRECTOR

Lizzie Sorkin, born and raised in Northern California, graduated with a Bachelor?s in Film from the School of Film and Animation at Rochester Institute of Technology. She has created several films that have been submitted to film festivals around the globe. Films include Don?t Mind? and Page Me, both films were co-directed with Patti Durr. This specific documentary, Talking Heads/Signing Hands, took about three years to complete. The idea was inspired from a deaf studies course taught by J.Matt Searls, Deaf Culture in America.

As a committed community member at RIT, she researched the relationships between the deaf and hearing people on campus. After some thought brewing, she started taping talents in a vacant office space on campus while borrowing lights and a camera. Pretty soon, after about eight tapes, she realized this was her thesis. She continued on to a total of about 17 tapes. This documentary was created with the hope to bridge.
